This little town owes his history and fortune to its water. The Tirino river that crosses it, became recently a fluvial park, known as one of Italys most limpid river. It is full of fishes like trouts and prowns, which are part of the traditional dishes.This river favored, in the year 1000, the settlement of a monastic order which built the benedectine church of S.Maria of Cartignano on this site. The church, still in existence, is characterized by a portal with a rounded window and by an ogival bell tower, the interior of the building is composed by a nave and two side aisles with round arches; the painting have been made in 1237 by Armanino da Modena.In the following centuries important Lords settled here and their presence remains in the massive Medicean castle located at the top of the city wall.The apartments, placed inside the ancient castle wall, are elegantly furnished.
