Started in the thirteenth century near the site of an earlier Roman fort, the fourteenth century great keep and double gatehouse remain. The building was restored and used as a residence in the seventeenth century by the Clifford family.
The site, which is managed by English Heritage, offers an exhibition and gift shop. Views are obtained by climbing to the top of the keep. Apart from the keep, there is good wheelchair access and a car park on site
