I used to live different area of Istanbul and the place where i try to tell you is really close my home and i feel always so excited when i pass there after visiting there.
-THE AREA-
One of important places of interest in Istanbul is Sultanahmet regions of the Historic. During the Roman Empire , Byzantine Empire and Ottoman Empir, the heart of the city was always this region where the places of emperors were built. This different emperors have different kind of style of architecture so this is great to taste different styles. The outdoor arwa that is named as Hippodrome , which was the center of the city during Byzantine and Ottoman ages,is also located here.
In order to pay a complete visit to the great works such as Hagia Sophia Museum, Topkapi; Palace,Sultanahmet Mosque, which are built very near to each other,as well as the Archeological Museum,Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts and Mosaic Museum, one should spend at least a couple of days in this area.
-HOW TO GO THERE-
I will say that the area is still the heart of Istanbul and for going there really easy. Most of busses will go there or pass away from near. From Beyazit Square you can use tramway or walking in the streets and find there too will be so great. Because the place is also really historical too. In there you can also use all busses except Besiktas , Sisli. From Taksim Square you can use the busses too that which is go Eminönü (the general name of there) or Beyazit. From the Anatolian side of Istanbul you can use the sea busses which is came to Eminönü. Or if coming Taksim is easy for you, you can use this way too. By the way if you come Istanbul with a tour, you will definetly visit there with travel guides.
-HISTORY-
In 360, the Byzantine Emperor Constantine wanted to a church which will be great in this time thats why the first name of church was Megalo Ekklesia (the Great Church). Between the years of 404-416, a bigger and more lasting church was constructed by the architect Ruffinos on the foundations of this wooden building, it was completely burnt during a fire in the year of 404. In 416 the area was opened for the public. The financier of this second church, with 3 naved basilica design, was Emperor Theodosius. The foundation walls, stairs and the sheep designed pediment friezes of the building just in front of Hagia Sophia are seen at the entrance of the museum. They were destroyed by the rebel against the Emperor during the sanguinary Nika (viktory) revolt, which began in 532. After that, Emperor Justinian, who met his throne again, had the present church constructed. He gave the task of construction this church to the two most famous Anatolian architects of the time, mathematician Arthemius of Tralles (todays Ayd&305;n city) and Isidorus from Miletus. The best construction material and the best masons were brought to the city from all over the empire, and for the 5 years, over 100 masters and 10,000 laborers worked in there. In 726, Iconoclastic Era was started and in that time the mosaics concerning the religious scenes and holy personalities of all churches together with Sophias were destroyed and simple cross shapes were decorated instead. At the end of the Era in 843,all religions pictures were allowed again. In 1204,Latin invasion, the treasury was plundered by the Crusaders. The mosaics with gold colored background were ruined to a large extend. In this period Hagia Sophia was used as the Catholic Master Church. When the Latin invaders abondoned the city in 1261,the church came into use as an Orthodox church again. Hagia Sophia was damaged badly beause of the eartquake of 14. and 15. centuries. Following the conquest Fatih Sultan Mehmet, performed the Friday service in Hagia Sophia on 3rd June of 1453. Hagia Sophia was converted into a mosque. The mosaics were covered wit with thin lime and the cross shapes on the wall were engraved, and vertical sides of the cross shapes on the doors were extracted by this way. In republican time Hagia Sophia converted into a museum in 1934.
-VISITING MUSEUM-
When you entering the museum you feel shocked because of the magnificiant of buildings. The museum has nave, narthexes and galaries side and they are all so interesting.
Narthexes; in this area there is no ornamentation on the walls and this part used for preparation place before praying. Beautiful ornaments is beginning inner narthex. There is many figures on the wall which are create mystic. There are 9 doors for the passage from the inner narthex to the main residence. Every door used for different kind of people in the time.
Nave;entering the nave from the inner narthex, the first thing that draws the attention is the magnificence of the dome that looks as a church itself. There is many figures about Christanity on the wall which are stayed from the Byzantine Emperor to this time. The Arabic written huge plates on the side walls and the corners, have the names of leading personalities of Islam. On the side of the niche, the name Allah (God),on the left Muhammed and some Islamic people names are stayed. These are came from the time when the museum used for as a mosque. I think the side of this place really interesting. And feel so better to culturel brothered as in days.
Galaries;on the galaries you can see the all nice mosaics on the wall that is all about both Islam and Christinaty.
After visiting this areas the tour of Hagia Sophia is finished. But day is not finished and there is so many area that you can visit too. In the gift shop you can find do many nice postcards, nice small things for memory.
