-SULTANAHMET MOSQUE-
the area of Sultanahmet Square there is lots of nice places that you should definetly visit if you come Istanbul. The area is really unforgattable that you would like to visit there again again. I had written about the Hagia Sophia so now the time is a mosque which is opposite of Hagia Sophia. I was visiting there many years ago but some of times i have visited the Sultanahmet Square with my friends.
-the area-
I had been writing about the area before when i had written about Hagia Sophia Museum. But i think i have to write again for Sultanahmet Mosque. The area called Sultanahmet Square iheart of city all of the tiimes. During the Roman Empire , Byzantine Empire and Ottoman Empire times Istanbul was capital city and the area was city centre in this times. Actually in this time also the square is the centre of city i will say. And most of the tourists come Istanbul just visiting this wonderful area. The square is like an island and the museums, historical places are like a sea. I feel really excited when i have been visiting there because of art and history.
-how to go there-
The area Sultanahmet Square is still heart of Istanbul so going there is really easy. Most of busses will go there from so many areas. From Taksim Square you can use Taksim-Beyazit or Taksim-Eminönü busses. From Beyazit Square you can use all the busses except Sisli and Besiktas. But also all the area there are busses to go Beyazit that they pass from there so you can use them. There is also tramway which is like a metro that you can use for going there. From Asian side of Istanbul you can use sea busses which are coming Eminönü. Sultanahmet Square is stayed in Eminönü that is a little note. Or in Kadiköy Square there are minibusses to go Taksim that you can also use it. By the way if you come Istanbul with a tour, they will make an organisation to go this area with a travel guide. Or when you come Istanbul you can find nice organization tour in here and you will not care about going there maybe. The tourist busses are really nice to visiting city.
-history-
Well now the time to telling about the Sultanahmet Mosque. The mosque which was constructed by the 14th Ottoman Sultan Ahmet 1,who ruled between the years of 1603-1617,is the greatest and the most splendid mosque of Istanbul. The mosque started in 1609 by architect Mehmet Aga who was student of Architect Sinan. The construction was completed in 1616. The premises consisted of a madrasah, a hospital,a carvansary,a school,an Arasta Bazaar,a mausoleum and a public fountain together with the mosque. The hospital and the caravansary were damaged in 19th century. Sultan Ahmet Mosque is the last impressive structure of Ottoman religious architecture. Altough many other mosques were built after this one , none of them reached to the dimension and to the elegance of the decoration of Sultan Ahmet Mosque. The mosque was built there because Topkapi Palace is really close there.
-visiting the mosque-
While i was entering the mosque i feel really excited because of really beautiful carpets, tile pieces and the magnificent of building. There are really beautiful tile pieces which were from Iznik that give an another name to mosque. Many people called there Mavi Camii (Blue Mosque) because of these pieces. The silk carpets on the floor of hundredsof square meters were brought from selected weaving centers, and hundreds of crystal oil lamps used for illumination were imported. There are five doors for entrance opening into outer courtyard. Among these doors, there is a chain hanging above the main entrance. Acording to legend, the reason why this chain was hung, was to have the sultan who came to the mosque on his horse,to get off his horse and walk in with respect like anyone else. There are three portals that provide access to the inner courtyard,as you climb up the stairs. There are taps used for ablutions below the north portico of the front courtyard. There is a fountain for ablutions in the middle of the courtyard with 6 corners and 6 columns. 30 small size domes are constructed on a total 26 granite columns. The mosque has 6 minarets and this makes the mosque only 6 minarets in Istanbul and in Turkey. There are 16 balconies in second floor that you will see all the mosque from there.
The mosque is open for praying and also for tourists will travel here also. After visiting there in gift shop you can find nice postcards, there are also nice bookmarks which are looks like tile pieces of the mosque.
Visiting this mosque is really nice and a little note in here. The mosque built opposite the Hagia Sophia for culturel brothered. And both buildings have the same size.
