Büyükada
I would like to tell about one of interesting and nice area of Istanbul today. The island is in the Sea of Marmara. Most of people have no idea about Princes Islands if they have not been in Istanbul yet. I feel a bit sad because of this cause i think if you are visiting Istanbul you should visit one of this islands, getting some time and fresh air in there. I have been all nine islands before but at the first time i would like to write about Büyükada where is my favourite area in Istanbul.
I have been in there for several times for getting times. The island was our school-trip area that is why it is always special for me. But after i entered the university and moved to Eskisehir i could not find the time to go there again for two years.
If you get bored of visiting historical places and want some fresh air and enjoy the sun and the sea may visit Büyükada and have a phaeton ride, take a swim and have some fish, visit St. Yorgi Church.
If we talk about the history of Büyükada we should talk about the King Philip 2 who is the father of Alexander. Because many golden coins which is from the King Philip have found in the island. Nowadays they are showed in Istanbul Archaeological Museum. I may sadly say that the history of island (and other islands of Princes) is not really really interesting for telling or i have not heard about any really different story about there. I found myself it is really interesting this situation because Istanbul has a lot of story about historical places. The island was not used many years in Byzantine times. The island was used as a jail as usual in that times. After conqueror of Istanbul, the island was opened for accommodation. Büyükada is always really popular within Greek and Armenian people past and now. In the 19. century the island got more popularity in all of people especially for rich people. They try to buy a house there for using it as a summer house. For quite winter times the island was used as a home of artists, writers, poets. That is why you can see some houses which is museum in there. Nowadays the island is great area for accommodation and it also welcomes you for getting time.
If you are thinking about how to go there do not worry about this. Because there are so many new sea busses and new area for station of seabusses. Some years ago you can find seabusses which are took there to you only in Eminönü and Bostanci. Now there is many sea busses station you can find in township. But i think the best thing is the seabusses are getting really beautiful and modern design. They are really clean and the journey is getting really nice. The tickets are really inexpensive that only 2 TL that mean is only 1.2€.
When you arrived the island you can see some restaurant near the seaside you can choose one of them for getting your meal. In the restaurants the best thing is eating fish i think. You can choose your fish which is in on the ice or in an aquarium. Generally the restaurants will offer you salad, bread, water and some small fish related food by freely! After the meal the restaurant will offer you a couple of tea or coffee and again they are free. And if you have a luck there will be a piece of Helva which is one of tradition dessert of Turkiye.
In the island there is no car so you should visit there with walking, riding bike or phaeton. But i feel that in that kind of areas this is a great way for visiting. The islanders are really nice and friendly. I mostly go there with my schoolmates and you know if you go somewhere with your schoolmates you will probably do not care about the time and walking on. And most of times we were all so tired and happily that the people who live in the island are always help us! They invited us their beautiful garden and we could be relax. If you have a chance to talk them it will be so nicer! They are all really talkative and nice.
I will say that the island is like a small Istanbul with the people who are from different religions and culture. In the island you can see a mosque, a synago, a roman catholic church and a orthodox church. If you come Istanbul on may you can join a trip of wish which is one of culture of St. Yorgi Church. It is like a journey which is start from pier to the church. It seems like a christian culture but i will say that it is all of religious culture in Turkiye.
There is a tradition that rent a bike or phaeton in there. There is two way for phaeton that mean you can join for small of long journey. Long journey is the best way for seeing all over the island.
On the island you can find a change for swimming. The sea on the island is really clear and the beaches are quite nice.
Finally i really strongly recommend that if you are coming Istanbul you can get some times in one of islands for fresh air and more relaxing. And if you are coming there you should take your sport shoes for walking a lot and camera for taking lots of photos.
