[di più]When India was partitioned in 1947, the art collection of the Punjab which had been housed in Lahore, was also divided - with 60% of the exhibits staying in Pakistan and the balance moving to India. Over the years the collection moved around between Amritsar, Shimla and Patiala before finding a permanent home in Chandigarh. The museum is particularly known for its collection of Gandharan Sculptures and Miniature Paintings.
The museum has three wings - the Art Gallery, the Natural History Museum and the City Museum. The latter of these charts the foundation and construction of this highly unusual Indian city which was designed by the European architect Le Corbusier.
Opening hours are from 10 am to 4.30 pm daily (except Mondays and holidays). Entrance fees are listed on the website as 2 rupees (less than 5 Euro cents) with a camera fee of 5 rupees.
Guided tours and special events are available to the public.
