[di più]La Vieille Cheminée is a family owned plantation farm, surrounded by 2 rivers that border 75 hectares of forests: travellers’ palm, indigenous trees and 50 hectares of diverse plantations: sugar cane, palm heart, pineapples and bananas. The entrance to the estate is overshadowed by an ancient stone chimney – the last remnants of the village’s former sugar mill, dating from 1874.
Chamarel was first inhabited in 1723 by a French family established on the island, the de Chazal de Chamarel, who gave their name to the area.
275 years later, seduced by the beauty of the region, we enthusiastically poured all of our energy into its development and history: recreating childhood memories that spoke of days gone by, where we, as children, had the ocean as our swimming pool, sugar cane and rambling forests as our garden, and where our parents took the time to really live with their children, teaching them lessons about the slow passing of time.
Overnight stays are offered in lodges decorated with simplicity and taste. The houses have fully equipped kitchens but meals are available upon a 24h order and are dropped in your cottage.
During a stay on the farm, the charm and magic operates, and one is transported to a Mauritius of long ago – where life under the shadow of the old stone chimney was gentle, cradled by the sounds of the old tractor, the song of the singing roosters and the harvesting of the sugar cane fields.
Close to the farm, the Chamarel Waterfall, the Seven colored Earths and the rhum factory are places to visit during your stay.
A swimming pool on top of a hill in the middle of the domain, offer a superb view on the countryside as well as an ideal spot for spending a relaxing day. We can organize some sandwiches and a cool bag on request
Our residing guests have the free access to the numerous paths of the domain.
La Cabane, next to the stables is also the farm office. Tea and coffee is at your disposal, which you may drink watching the horses come back from their pastures, or in a cosy chair next to the fireplace in the winter time.
