[di più]The Parish Church of St Mary, also called St Mary the Virgin, is in the Kemptown area of Brighton. It belongs to the Church of England Diocese of Chichester.
Built in the 1870s, it replaced an earlier church building which collapsed. Its neo-Gothic style was in vogue at the time, but its exterior of red brick belies a striking interior, which has led to the church being called the “cathedral of Kemptown”. It was the only English church designed by the architect, William Emerson, who used the high Gothic arches and stained glass to create a space of some grandeur. Features of note include the pulpit of Caen stone, the font column of Alpine granite and the carved oak choir stalls. The organ is considered one of the masterpieces of Bevington the organ-maker and is frequently used for recitals.
Details of services and other church activities are on the website. The church is also open on some weekday mornings for visitors and for private prayer.
