[di più]Originally a 12th century donjon of the castle of the counts of Boulogne, the town acquired it when a new castle was built, and converted it into a belfry. It fulfilled all the functions of a belfry of those times: watchtower, prison, treasury, council meeting place. It survived the Revolution because as a watchtower it provided a view of enemy shipping in the Channel. The post of watchman continued until 1931 when the last incumbent died.
The city hall now butts up to the belfry so only the north and west faa§ades are visible. The vaulted arms room on the ground floor and the audience room on the first floor were almost certainly part of the original donjon. The ground floor also has a small display of items from the lower town. A staircase leads up to a terrace with a fine view of the town, the Channel and the English coast on a clear day. Guided tours are available through the tourist office by prior reservation.
