[di più]The Hindu temple of Shri Swaminarayan Mandir was built by Swaminarayan, the founder of the Swaminarayan Sampraday deity. It was built in 1822 and its construction took just one year to complete. It is one of 9 temples (or mandirs) that were founded by Swaminarayan, the others were at Vadtal, Ahmedabad,Junagadh, Dholera, Dholka, Muli, Gadphur and Jetalpur.
In January 2001 a huge earthquake struck the town of Bhuj and a large part of the Shree Swaminarayan Mandir was destroyed. Following this disaster the temple was considered to be unsafe and has not been used as a place of worship since. It is however currently being restored and is due to re-open in 2010.
