[di più]The right to erect a belfry was granted in 1346 because of Béthune's loyalty during the 100 Years War. That wooden tower burned down and was replaced by a sandstone version in medieval style topped by a dragon, it was known as the "Beffy", by 1503. Over the years houses grew up around the tower, and these saved it from total destruction in World War I, although the top part was destroyed. Restoration was complete by 1931, and the belfry now stands in an open space. It is one of a group of belfries in the region now inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage site list.
There are 133 steps and four storeys in the 50m high tower. Visitors can see the vaulted magistrates' room and the lookout room, a function that was retained up to 1918. At the top is the carillon of bells and the chiming clock which plays a variety of tunes.
Guided visits are normally offered by the tourist office but are suspended while major works to build an underground car park are being carried out. The belfry is floodlit with a coloured mosaic every evening.
