On my first visit to India I took a three week tour which included several of India's tiger parks. The most impressive of these (even though the tigers were very shy and kept away) was Bandhavgarh National Park. We stayed three nights at the Bandhavgarh Jungle Lodge.
Our visit was over the Christmas and New Year break so the coldest time of the year. This was a bit of a problem since the small bungalows at the lodge were not well insulated and were generally very cold. The bungalows are very simple and have little more than a bed, a chair, and a small dresser. The bathrooms might have hot water in the showers if you are lucky and the electrics are scary. My room mate blew all the lights in our room by using her hair dryer (it happened several times over the three week trip). We went to the reception to tell them what had happened and to ask for someone to fix it whilst we had dinner. We also asked if we could have a heater because the room was so cold. We went back to the room to show the assistant the problem and watched him 'test the circuits' by jamming his screwdriver into the wiring. My room mate was a nurse and I asked her to remind me of the CPR technique whilst we watched him. After poking around for about five minutes, rubbing his chin and making 'shame it's one of those' type noises, we left him to it and headed off to the restaurant.
After our dinner, we went back to the reception to ask if there'd been any progress and the man wanted to go back to the room with us. We were suspicious that this was a technique to try to get a tip out of us but when we got there but no, it was something different. He wanted to show us how he'd managed to wire the entire room, lights, sockets and all, through the socket that was running the small heater. There were bare wires all over the place so we did what any health and safety conscious people would do - went back to the bar and drank enough beer so we didn’t care any more.
The game drives organised by the lodge were excellent but very cold. For an extra fee (quite a high one) you could opt to have the resident naturalist go in your jeep. We paid on our last drive but still didn't see anything. The park offers elephant back game walks too but these were very expensive and nobody opted to have one although we did get the chance to help wash the elephants one morning.
The lodge has quiet but scruffy grounds and you'll need to be good at entertaining yourself during the 'down time' between drives. There's nothing much to do in the area, so be prepared for just soaking up the atmosphere and comparing notes on what you saw.
