[di più]The belfry we see today marked the return of Aire-sur-la-Lys to France under the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. Louis XIV gave permission for a new belfry to replace the one which had previously collapsed. The architect, Héroguel, designed the town hall and the belfry together in neo-classical style using brick and dressed stone. Inside the town hall is a huge monumental staircase and woodwork dating from the original building.
The belfry is one of a group of belfries of northern France and Belgium that are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, each of which is a display of civic power characteristic of the region. There are 236 steps to the top and visits are available on Saturdays at 3pm, between 1 April and 30 September. Bookings are made at the Tourist Office. Children under 12 are not allowed.
