[di più]This belfry dates from 1209 and is one of the oldest in France. Several civic buildings grew up around it over the centuries but today only the 15th century gothic treasury remains. This now holds the town archives and is the entry to the local museum.
Although the town was badly bombed in Word War II most of the belfry survived and was restored by 1986. It is square, 33m high, and austere in design. Gargoyles and a sundial adorn the sides. The weather-vane at the top represents the Count of Ponthieu who granted the town community rights in 1130.
Inside, some of the rooms house parts of the museum collection. On the 3rd storey the so-called "salle haute" was once a prison and has some graffiti from the 15th and 16th centuries. There is a fine view from the top.
Guided group visits are available all year round and are booked in advance. The belfry is now a UNESCO World Heritage site, along with others in the region. Belfries were a powerful symbol of civic pride and status, and the group represents various styles and periods.
